I am often asked how can aromatherapy relieve stress. How does it help? Well … it helps in many wonderful ways! Essential oils all have many different properties and ways in which they heal, relax and rejuvenate the body. The smell of the oil can instantly calm people down and relax them, and as our sense of smell is directly linked to memory, we can quickly and easily use aromatherapy to remember a positive or relaxing time from our past.

The oils therapeutic properties can also work via being added to carrier oils and massaged into the body. There any many oils which are excellent for stress, anxiety or depression. Often one may look as to what the cause of the stress is, so specific oils can be chosen. For example Frankincense.  It smells beautiful and is great at helping achieve a deep sense of relaxation, and is said to be great for helping cut ties to the past, so may be great for stress associated with relationship issues. It also has the added benefit of being a powerful pulmonary antiseptic, so great for colds, chest infections and asthma. It is also a wonderful tonic for aging skin.

Geranium is a lovely oil for helping deal with hormonally related stress issues, and often women love this oil. It is a powerful antidepressant, antiseptic and astringent. It can help balance the hormones, by stimulating the adrenal cortex,which then in turn helps women feel much more relaxed. It is hugely beneficial for teenagers at the beginning of the hormonal cycle and during the menopause later in life.

Men often prefer more woody oils, such as Sandalwood, which is well known for its balancing effects on the nervous system. Again, as well as being a calmative, it is antiseptic, and helps soothes persistent coughs, and is astringent, so great for skin problems.
